Our Curriculum – KS3

At our Bennerley Site, we support students in Primary through to Key Stage 3 who have either been permanently excluded or are at risk of permanent exclusion from mainstream education. Our focus is to positively re-engage pupils in preparation for the next stage of their educational journey, whether that be reintegration to mainstream education or where appropriate transition between our own sites and key stages.

At Key Stage 3 our students have access to a broad and balanced curriculum comprising of: English, Maths, Science, Art, Geography, History, PSHRE, RE & PE. Students are taught using the national curriculum framework, with an understanding of skills and topics at the next stage of learning whether at GCSE or Functional Skill level. This allows us to thread knowledge and skills through our topic areas to enable students to develop academically.
Our Key Stage 3 curriculum is very much designed to support our students next steps and strikes a balance between academic and personal development. We support our students to understand and value themselves, develop resilience and an understanding of their emotions, build positive relationships and make responsible decisions.
Intent
To build on both the social and academic skills that students need to either:
  • successfully reintegrate in to their existing or new mainstream school OR
  • prepare them for KS4 provision
Implementation
Learning occurs through a board and balanced curriculum with a focus on core subjects, functional skill approaches to learning, and varied vocational curriculum content.
Impact
  • In our KS3 curriculum, students learn to re-engage with learning, build positive relationships and experience success, eventually, enjoying being in school again.
  • Students are ready to return to mainstream school, equipped with the relevant social skills and ability to regulate their behaviour OR
  • are prepared to move on to the challenges of KS4 study and bespoke learning pathways
  • Students have secured the expected numeracy and literacy skills when they reach key transition points

If you require any additional information regarding the curriculum, please do no hesitate to contact the school office.
